One of my clients is a huge, global corporation (that shall remain nameless), and they use Notes. I only support a smallish design department that uses Macs, and I quickly learned to loathe Notes.

Allow me to quote a rant I wrote about it on 10/8/02, after coming home from a long day of battling Notes issues at that client:

"Lotus Notes [6.0] for the Mac is a turd that they just keep trying to polish. Whoo hoo, it's finally Carbonized and sports the Aqua interface-- that's like putting a fresh coat of paint on an outhouse. This is the most half-assed Mac port of a Windows app since Microsoft Word 6-- scads of 8.3-named library files, a terribly unMaclike interface that is possibly the worst mangling of the 'web browser' metaphor that I have ever seen, and a complete inability to accommodate more than one user per machine, even on a multi-user based OS like Mac OS X. You'd think a company like IBM could actually assemble a team of competent Mac programmers, but judging by the quality of Notes for the Mac, they can't. Memo to IBM/Lotus: Half-assed Mac support is worse than none at all. Rebuild Notes [for the Mac] from scratch, or take it out back and shoot it. It makes Outlook/Exchange look like paradise, even with all the security and virus problems."

That client is now using 6.5.4, and I still hate it. Four years later, and it *still* wants to put the user data folder inside the Notes application folder by default when you install! Last week I ran Migration Assistant to move someone's data back to a PowerBook that had returned from being serviced, and Notes got messed up somehow. It was set to spellcheck all outgoing messages automatically, but lost the location of its dictionary. How do you think Notes would handle that? Just inform the user, "I can't spellcheck, but would you like me send out the message anyway?", right? Wrong! It wouldn't let the user send any mail at all, until I remoted in and disabled the spellcheck entirely. When I was back on site today, I had to reinstall Notes on her machine to fix it.

Which brings us to the problem of support. The only solution I can find for 99% of Notes issues on the Mac is to just reinstall the damned thing.

I could keep on going, but you get the picture.... Notes is a godawful abortion of a software program, and I would lead a much happier life if I didn't have to deal with it. IBM claims they want to improve it? Well they've certainly got their work cut out for them, don't they?

I wonder what kind of upload bandwidth you need to broadcast full quality HD as I can imagine Skype/Facetime compress your video and lose a lot of quality, thus negating the need for an HD camera at all.

Unless you made the music and the video, you have no rights to it. You need to contact either: 1. a lawyer; 2. the recording company; or 3. a lawyer.

Dude... if you're dropping 90% of your calls on the iPhone 3G then you should have talked to AT&T. They would have given you a personal cell tower to fix your signal issue. Your iPhone has nothing to do with your poor signal strength.

The reason I drop so many calls is that most of my phone calls are made on the drive home from work and AT&T has several dead zones along that drive. It's not like I'm out in the boonies, either. I'm never more than a couple of miles away from an interstate.

The thing that pisses me off more than anything is the fact that I'll look at the phone immediately after dropping the call and see 3-4 bars of 3G signal. I think AT&T's towers are just overloaded or poor quality. I'm well aware that it isn't the phone's fault, which is why I want to switch to Verizon. But I refuse to pay to switch to a new carrier just to get a phone that is 10 months old and has a well-known problem with its antenna. Not to mention the fact that almost every other manufacturer will have a 4G compatible phone by the time Apple gets around to producing one.

I don't want to lock in a 2 year contract on already obsolete technology.

I realise that they didn't want to detract from the phone or the t.v. box but they could have made some offline comments about availability of iWork and iLife.

    It just seems incomplete.

The world's biggest Viper dealer is up here about 45mins away from me. Woodhouse is THE place to go if you want to buy, or just gawk at, a ton of sweet Vipers. They're one of Dodge's biggest clients in the motorsports world, and expanded that to the street cars. Pretty sweet place. I bought my Talon from them years ago, and got to see The Viper Pit, as they call it. It is a sight to behold....

I've attended SCCA World Challenge GT racing where Woodhouse Performance raced vipers. Always loved watching the Vipers, Corvettes, Porsches, and Cadillacs mix it up and swap paint for an hour. I'll see the World Challenge races this year at Petit Le Mans (Road Atlanta). That's a fun track to watch them race.

    Hi All,

First off I am new here, so Hi again

I have a small problem getting Microsoft Outlook 2001 to use my 2003 Exchange server. I have to admit I am new to macs and am finding it a little hard to do anything but I am trying.

From what I can tell is that for some reason my the mac will not resolve the server name to an ip address. I mean when I look in the Outlook settings, under services --> properties if I place the servers IP address there and then the user name and then 'check the name' it resolves the name of the server and under lines the user name (which as far as I am concerned has worked).

Yet when I then launch Outlook I get a message saying folders could not be opened. The attempt to log on to the server failed..... Microdoft Outlook could not be started. The attempt to log on to the MS Exchange Server failed....................

What I have done so far:-
Updated the /etc/hosts file and added the ip address for the server (can ping both IP and name from the console and network util)
When in Outlook settings --> properties and user the server name instead of the IP address and try and check name I get an error.. The name could not be resolved. Network problems are preventing connection to the MS Exchange Server, Contact your system adminsitrator (me).

Sorry for the long post but this is a real problem. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Ian

PS The only thing I can sort of think of at the moment is that Outlook starts I think in classic mode??? I am not sure if this starts a new shell and therefore ignores the /etc/hosts file and that is the reason why it can not resolve the server name. If I am right my next question would be where is the hosts file for the classic enviroment??

But what exactly is your response to the fact that iOS as a platform has more users - therefore is more enticing to developers? And that Android is just a free OS that's modified and put on to phone handsets, mostly HORRID handsets, and many that can't even run an app? You're defending a Linux kernel like it's some breakthrough. Newsflash - it's not.

Most of the phones running android within the last year and a half can run 90% of the apps available on the Market. And most of the handsets are great for their use, rather it be budget smartphone: Optimus 1 family or highend: Droid line or Keyboard: G2 by htc. Developers are flocking to android because it is growing faster then iOS.
