I think they're slower than you think if you're talking raw DSP muscle.
The price/performance of a mac is terrible at the moment but the interface, available software and midi management (especially patchnames) is still way ahead of the PC.
There's a thread on the Protools LE for Windows forum on the Digidesign User Conference where they've put together the best PC for under $800 and tested it in protools LE using the same 5 plug-ins per track test as those of us in the mac forum have performed.
This PC, an Athlon XP2200+ handles 180 plug-ins
The fastest mac currently tested, with an original retail value of $3,499 handles only 135 plug-ins.
Now concidering the mac in question is only running 1 of it's cpus, has a 133MHz FSB to the 333Mhz FSB on the PC and it's less than half the clock speed, it's quite impressive on paper but 4 times the price just for a superdrive, firewire and an OS that doesn't make me puke just looking at it isn't really very good.
A plus point is those plug-in counts will soar in OS X once Protools LE is dual CPU aware and I know any mac I buy will be more than fast enough to handle at least 4 times what my beige G3 can. It's just annoying that when I do get round to getting a faster model a used dual 800 SQ or maybe even a dual 1Ghz QS is the best I can hope for and both are thoroughly battered senseless by a dirt cheap PC.
Mind you, once I've got a new mac I doubt I'll care what those other brands can do. It's the OS that's kept me hooked on macs and OS X looks absolutely fantasic for audio.

I miss Sound Edit 16.
I used that app so much in the old days... way before Macromedia and Adobe got into the game.

Well here's a screenshot form my Dot Mac Web Mail. I must say I like the new layout, the only thing I think it's missing is a Junk Mail feature, you know if you can sync the Junk preferences from your Apple Mail app to the Web Mail app, now that would be a nice improvement but, other than that. This is pretty darn good. Now just lower the price and bump the storage or features and we'll be good ;)

Corporation tax only taxes companies profits...
How about if you need more tax revenue, you jack up taxes on imported goods?
Because then everyone else will do the same and your exports will suffer. Additionally its illegal under WTO rules.

One possibility is that they could go to a 3.7" and still keep the 960x640 resolution. This would allow for a larger screen and it could still maintain it's "retina" display at ~311 pixels per inch (if I did my math right :o). I'm sure they could tweak some apps like Safari to take advantage of the larger screen size (without breaking 3rd party apps that are already built for the 960x640 resolution).

What has Obama really done besides go on vacation for the last few years? How the hell has he raised any bar? Tell me what all he promised to do and then tell me exactly how many of those things he has accomplished so far.
He's done all he's had to do for pretty much his entire life - he showed up.

Im no expert on body language, but him leaning back suggests hes relaxed. Him having his legs crossed means hes talking about something serious. His hands suggest hes asking a question or offering something.
Is he smiling in the picture?

My MBA Ultimate is perfect for me right now as my sole working machine. This is simply a super balanced laptop for those seeking mobility and reasonable performance. No need for me to fix what's not broken right now.
I won't be jumping in on a SB+HD3000 upgrade, so I will pass on the next update until Ivy comes out (as long as it's paired with a decent GPU and not with a lame HD3000-like).

It's too bad really, but he doesn't look long for this world. No one that skinny is healthy. My guess is that the last few months have been spent in trying to put some weight on the guy. Chemo therapy cannot be given to someone who is already too weak......
I hope I'm wrong.
I'm not far off being that skinny. I eat well, and exercise 4-5 times a week.
While Jobs undoubtedly has some health issues (none of us know what they are right now - other than the fairly major fact that he has a transplanted liver) but to say no one healthy is that thin is just not true.
Some people have quite spectacularly high metabolisms
Mr Jobs has never exactly been a chubber, has he? :P

The 3G graph just shows how ignorant people are when choosing between ATT and Verizon.
ATT has the fastest 3G network
ATT has GSM, the standard chipset around the globe
Dropped calls and data plan are not the same thing
All this equals that people are ignorant
I bought a Verizon iPad because I have an AT&T iPhone. I figured that if one doesn't work, the other will. I saw no need to get two devices on the same network.
But go ahead, explain to me why that's stupid, since I clearly don't get it and I'm ignorant.

Who wants to take bets on when the update will be released on torrent sites and FTP servers just like the dev beta? :D
It says 'through Software Update', so if you have Leopard installed, you should be able to download it just like normal updates. No need to go BACK to torrents ;) .

Macs have the intelligence built in to auto-connect independent of the cable type. It doesn't matter what kind of cable you use, your Mac sorts it out internally. Cool, huh?

I was at the Apple Store yesterday and I placed my Black iPhone side-by-side (on a flat surface) with White model they have on display, and my friend and I could not tell the difference is thickness.
I did the same with 2 other White models and had the same result, so I was rather baffled as to what the bloggers were reporting. So Phil Schiller was not lying, thanks Phil.

Not from the full size picture, it appears Obama is drinking water as well.
Actually, I only see two glasses of wine at the table...

It will have 100 million transistors on it and it will be manufactured at .09 microns. Also, here is the doozy, it will have 1 mb of L2 on die cache, and it will support 333mhz bus speeds, with the addition of DDR, that is a possible 667mhz bus speeds. By the way, if you were wondering, the Pentium 4 has 42 million transistors.
Now, for the G4: I am not sure how many transistors the G4 has, but I imagine it is way less then 100 million, or even 42 million, considering the P4 came out after the G4. Anyway, the cache on the G4 is higher on the high-end, 2mb of cache. But: the speed: 1.25Ghz? Can that really stand up to a P5 with 333mhz bus, and 3.2Ghz clock speeds? My opinion: most likely not.
Let's be honest, the P4 basically can beat the G4 in most tasks today, so a new faster version of the P4, the P5 can easily beat the G4, most likely in 95-99% of all tasks.
Ok, we have established that the G4 is, well, to slow against the P5, even though we don't know about it yet, I imagine it will be. Well, Apple just pulled the plug on OS 9 for January, what could this mean? I am not sure, only Steve knows. But Apple better come out with something that can at least compete with the Pentium 5, and it better come soon. I would not be surprised if Apple comes out with the G5 in January, just to say they were the first to have a generation 5 possessor, but I could be wrong.
Ok, I made my case, now, what do you guys think? By the way: I got this information about the Pentium 5 from eWeek, so it is reputable.
dumb ass, no theres no P5, P5 wont come out for a LOOOONG Time, PIV is expected to Scale up to 10ghz, this is just an upgraded PIV f00

I was very surprised to see the UK price is 199... which potentially makes it the cheapest price worldwide?

I think Steve would take issue with that statement.
Being a CEO doesn't mean you own the company.
I support veterans and families, they risk their lives and the government screws them over, but I cannot condone the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Did you vote for Barack Obama? He supports the violence in Afghanistan, he even increased it.
But back on topic. I think it's smart for the military to review the kit they are deploying down to the soldiers on the ground. They should be doing that far more often than they do. But you can't read too much into it. The Army especially requires a lot of kit of the type that Apple currently doesn't sell (PCs in the category of the Panasonic Toughbooks for example).

LoL they made 30billion of cuts. Ten times that wouldn't even be enough to save the US economy from absolute ruin. The Democrats are completely clueless as to the danger america is facing and even the republicans think it can be fixed by 60 billion.
The debt ceiling is the last stand for america's economy. If it is raised the total collapse of the US economy is set in stone and it will only be a matter of time.
btw Thomas Veil, your signature is actually false. It was true for some of the 2000s but even if you took all of the money from all the bankers, wall st
