You mean people aren't exactly rushing out to buy the iPhone 4, as apple preps the iPhone 5 - shocking.

Why would apple or verizon be surprised.

Then why is this guy saying the iPhone 4 could be sold well into 2012 at the current sales level ?

I guess this means end of the year introduction (if even that) for iPhone 4S/5 (or what ever they will call it). In all honesty I'm not surprised. With the current sales Apple could easily be pushing iPhone all the way to early 2012.

Seriously, the older the iPhone 4 gets, the further away the competition is. I doubt Apple can milk that cow for much longer.

Not necessarily. ACT UP was a very aggressive group in the 80's that used that motto to bring attention to the AIDS crisis. I didn't like them or their tactics much at all at the time either. But you know what? It worked. They definitely served their purpose and are responsible for bringing serious attention to HIV/AIDS. Because you know what? Standing up to bullies like social conservatives works.

What doesn't work is letting them walk all over you, like they've been doing for decades. I'm talking about people who, no matter what you do, will NEVER respect you unless you stand up to them. Sometimes, violence is the answer. I'm sorry, but that's just a sad truth. It should always be the last resort, but it is the only answer sometimes. If people like this think you'll never fight back, you'll always lose. Because you know why? They think we're evil. They think we're the enemy. They've dehumanized us to such an extent that they think it's OK to beat the crap out of us, take our rights and even try to take our children. Would you sit still for that? They will never see us as even remotely human. And if we sit there and take it, we'll never get anywhere. These are not people you play nice with, because they won't play nice back. They are going out of their way to hurt us. There is no doubt about that.

Why is a calling feature tied to a messaging one?

I'd imagine so it looks like people are getting something for "free" (I'd be willing to bet that most of their customers are already on an unlimited messaging plan, particularly if they're on a family plan) while still maintaining some semblance of profitability for the carrier (messaging plans are generally believed to be pure profit).

I'm excited about this feature, even if I don't truly *need* it. I'm on the lowest-tiered family plan right now and I have literally thousands of rollover minutes. Most of my friends and family are on AT&T (lots of iPhone users) and I don't call anyone all that often anyway. However, it's always nice to have yet another feature that establishes peace of mind. Plus, I hope this is the first in a long line of steps to reduce the overall cost of monthly service for AT&T users (unlikely, but I can dream...and perhaps a massive deflection to Verizon will help speed things along).

Plus, it's just another choice for users. I may not use my phone as a phone all that often, but lots of AT&T users do. I bet this reduces the overall cost of a plan for some iPhone users, particularly those on a family plan.

I know in 10.4 you can enable the machine as an xgrid client. Can you run the server portion in 10.4 or do you have to have the 10.4 server?

According to this macosxhints article (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050610040807931) you can with a bit of tweaking and some free apple server app downloads.

If the US signs the United Nations Convention Against Torture, and then admits using "enhanced interrogation" methods as part of its policy in the "War on Terror", then there is a double standard. We are either advocates of torture, or we are not.

Until advocates of "enhanced interrogation" grow a pair and start calling it torture, which is what it is, there is no point in even having a discussion on the subject.

Ok, I'll go first. E.I. = torture, and where is the line to hook electrodes up to KSM's balls?

I agree with most of what you're saying... but I think it's adobe's goal to push the most creative software on whatever they can. It's Apple's goal to provide the best experience for most people. Way more people are interested in using an iPad without a stylus - why sacrifice all those people for the minority of artists.

You want to draw, grab a wacom and mac.But if you want to go draw at the zoo or something, the iPad would make sense. Right now, pencil and paper are more convenient than a wacom and a mac for being mobile. I'd still like to see the iPad get to the point where a stylus makes sense for drawing on the go with it.

Now all they need to do is lower the price to $75, or include dotMac with iLife, or give discounts on Apple software with the purchase of .Mac.

Oh, and they need to increase speed and storage. And they need to add support for smartphones by enabling "push" IMAP.

And they in general need to stop depending on their tie-ins to the OS to make it worth it for the service... thats something MS would do. Make it worth it because it is a better product.

To me Serlet has more knowledge than Craig. He actually includes information about under the hood stuff and the nice new UI features. Craig just says "beautiful" "very natural". I will remember Serlet as the father of Leopard -- Apple's best release IMO and Craig with Lion, a release that really has nothing that exiting.
    Again just my opinion.

I'm guessing that you're not someone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Allen)who's been in that position (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Gates), though. How does your opinion account for those guys?

Right??? What does Microsoft have to do with Apple then? Did it become successful, then nearly go bankrupt, then become successful on the return of Mr Gates again? Mr Gates is now doing a damn site better work then ANYONE at Apple ever has, FACT! Unless you think charity is a waste of time? But as I never mentioned Microsoft, what's your point? It's not the same company as Apple.

    He did give a reason

Jesus, at least ONE person on here can respond with some common decency and common sense and actually correct me with a fact rather then respond as though I slagged of the messiah, even though most of you think Apple is the second coming.....

Thanks for the info mate. Makes much better sense to me now.

I'm sure Apple won't miss 'loosing' your money (seriously, why the hell can't people spell this word right), nor do they give a damn what you think, as they seem to understand what most people want, more so than any other company on the planet. I have the Lion beta installed, and it's by far their best release yet. Goodluck with the alienware.

Do me a favor mate, if your going to pick on my apparent spelling (loose is the correct spelling ;) but I meant lose I guess) then at least quote what I ACTUALLY typed rather then make up what you think I typed? It would help matters if you can't be bothered to respond with anything useful. And I'm glad to hear you want a dumb downed computer with an iPad interface, meanwhile MOST of the rest of the world will stick to 'real' computer OS

Good grief, here comes the "Sky is falling!" crowd

    Have fun with that.

Words are not sufficient to respond to this gem.

Everyone likes to try new things. 22 years is a long time. Most of us would like to drop what we're doing and try something new. Unfortunately, unlike Bertrand, most of us don't have the money to do it.

Yeah, drop what your experienced in, what you have done for 22 years!! Leave a massively successful company... Shame you couldn't be bothered to offer the reason he left like the guy I quoted above, instead you just gave the usual fanboy response to someone who dared to say a bad word about Apple

Have fun with your Alienware, be sure to have a backup generator on hand for the 12,000 LED's that thing has.

I hear battery life is 20 minutes.

Yeah, wow, a laptop, I'm so glad you 'Assumed' I would want a laptop! I was actually thinking of a desktop that is expandable, performs far better then any iMac, costs a lot less then a Mac Pro..... And Windows 7 is pretty damn good and flash works on it...

Macs would be an excellent choice for any business to use ...

Yeah, sure. Because all of those business/enterprise applications written exclusively for Windows run ah-so smoothly on Macs...

Just accept it, folks: There is no business case for using Macs in an enterprise environment.

Compatibility? Fail. (There is a world beyond the Microsoft .doc format where enterprise applications live. There's OLD Java, and many Java apps require a very specific Oracle JVM to run. There's .NET. There's Sharepoint. There's an IBM mainframe you need to talk to. There are department printers that have no OS X drivers. There's a long list of office equipment that only plays well with Windows.)

Enterprise-ready? Fail. See compatibility, see support, see backup.

Central administration? Fail. Try applying group policies to a Mac.

Central backup? Fail. No, Time Machine is NOT an enterprise solution.

TCO? Fail. Expensive hardware, short-lived platform support.

Enterprise-support from the manufacturer (Apple)? HUGE fail.

Roadmaps? Fail. Apple doesn't even know what the word means. You just cannot plan with this company and their products.

Product longevity? Knock-out Fail. (Try getting support for OS X Leopard in two years from now. Try getting support for Tiger or Panther TODAY. Then compare it to Windows XP, an OS from the year that will be officially supported until 2014. Then make your strategic choice and tell me with a straight face that you want to bet your money on Cupertino toys.)

It's MUCH easier to integrate Linux desktops into an enterprise environment than it is to put Mac OS X boxes in there. Why? Because some "blue chip" companies like Oracle and IBM actually use, sell and support Linux and make sure that it can be used in an enterprise environment.

Trying to push a home user/consumer platform like the Mac into a corporate environment is a very bad idea. Especially if the company behind the product recently even announced that they dropped their entire server hardware because nobody wanted them. Why should the head of a large IT department trust a company that just dropped their only product that was even remotely targeted at the enterprise market? It's like asking a CTO to bet the company's IT future on Nintendo Wiis.

And just for your info: I've had those discussions at the World Health Organization of the United Nations, and it turned out to be IMPOSSIBLE to integrate Macs into their IT environment. I had the only Mac (a 20" Core Duo) in a world wide network because I was able to talk someone higher up the ladder into approving the purchase order for it, but then I quickly had to give up on OS X and instead run Windows on it in order to get my job as an IT admin done and be able to use the IT resources of the other WHO centers. OS X Tiger totally sucked in our network for almost all of the above reasons, but Windows Vista and XP got the job done perfectly. It wasn't very persuasive to show off a Mac that only runs Windows. That's what you get for being an Apple fanboy, which I admittedly was at that time.

Where I work now, two other people bought Macs, and one of them has ordered Windows 7 yesterday and wants me to wipe out OS X from his hard disk and replace it with Windows. He's an engineer and not productive with OS X, rather the opposite: OS X slows him down and doesn't provide any value to him.

And personally, after more than five years in Apple land, I will now also move away from OS X. It's a consumer platform that's only there to lock people into the Apple hardware and their iTunes store. If the web browser and iTunes and maybe Final Cut Studio, Logic Studio or the Adobe Creative Suites are the only pieces of software that you need to be happy, then OS X probably is okay for you. For everything else, it quickly becomes a very expensive trap or just a disappointment. When Apple brag about how cool it is to run Windows in "Boot Camp" or a virtualization software, then this rather demonstrates the shortcomings of the Mac platform instead of its strengths. I can also run Windows in VirtualBox on Linux. But why is this an advantage? Where's the sense in dividing my hardware resources to support TWO operating systems to get ONE job done? What's the rationalization for that? There is none. It just shows that the Mac still is not a full computing platform without Microsoft products. And that is the ultimate case AGAINST migrating to Mac OS X.

I don't think the person you are responding to was equating homosexuality with anything. If you've ever given blood, which I have many times, you would know that you have to fill out a form every time which asks you questions based on high-risk behaviors, including sex-for-money, intravenous drug use, and male-to-male sex. They are in no way equated.

Except that the question "male to male sex" is discriminatory. It doesn't ask you "received anal sex", it asks you about your sexual orientation. Plain and simple, discriminatory and non-scientific because male-to-female sex has the exact same risks.

My last exposure to Notes was 12 yrs ago. We hated it. After 5 yrs, my then company decided to move to Exchange to much hype that it would be a lot better.

It wasn't. I still miss the days of Notes. I've since moved on to two different companies, each of whom have used Exchange. Not once has the Exchange implementation been any better than I remember Notes being more than 7 years previous.

But I will face facts. Notes lost the battle - it is a dead platform for all intents and purposes. As went 1-2-3, so went Notes. It's a shame really because Exchange/Outlook is so terrible, that you'd think anyone with a modicrum of experience could trump it without even trying really hard.

I mean, really, do you need 80% of one of my CPU cores to look up a name in an address book? And how large does the memory footprint of an e-mail app need to be? I often have to shut down Outlook just so compiles will complete in less time. But that will never get better now, because there is no one to push them.

Well said. Maybe its time freeware communities such as OpenOffice make a HUGE push of functionality, portability, efficiency, and ability to work with Active Directory & Such to challenge MS.
